Stephen King's Memoir to Writing: "On Writing"

A must read for everyone that has got anything to do with writing. An excerpt from the book 'on writing' is given below - Suman

In June of 1999, I decided to spend the summer finishing the damn writing book -- let Susan Moldow and Nan Graham at Scribner decide if it was good or bad, I thought. I read the manuscript over, prepared for the worst, and discovered I actually sort of liked what I had. The road to finishing it seemed clear-cut, too. I had finished the memoir ("C.V."), which attempted to show some of the incidents and life-situations which made me into the sort of writer I turned out to be, and I had covered the mechanics -- those that seemed most important to me, at least. What remained to be done was the key section, "On Writing," where I'd try to answer some of the questions I'd been asked in seminars and at speaking engagements, plus all those I wish I'd been asked...those questions about the language. On the night of June seventeenth, blissfully unaware that I was now less than forty-eight hours from my little date with Bryan Smith (not to mention Bullet the rottweiler), I sat down at our dining room table and listed all the questions I wanted to answer, all the points I wanted to address. On the eighteenth, I wrote the first four pages of the "On Writing" section. That was where the work still stood in late July, when I decided I'd better get back to work...or at least try. What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Cancer?

A symptom is an indication of disease, illness, injury, or that something is not right in the body. Symptoms are felt or noticed by a patient, but not easily observed by anyone else. For example chills, weakness, achiness, shortness of breath, and a cough are symptoms that might indicate pneumonia.

A sign is also an indication of illness, injury, or that something is not right in the body. But, signs are defined as observations made by a physician, nurse or other health care professional. Fever, rapid breathing rate, abnormal breathing sounds heard through a stethoscope are signs that may indicate pneumonia.

The presence of one symptom or sign may not provide enough information to suggest a cause. For example a rash in a child could be a symptom of a number of things including poison ivy, a generalized infection like rubella, an infection limited to the skin, or a food allergy. But, if the rash is associated with a high fever, chills, achiness and a sore throat, then all of the symptoms together provide a better picture of the illness. In many cases, a patient's signs and symptoms do not provide enough clues to determine the cause of an illness, and medical tests such as x-rays, blood tests, or a biopsy may be needed.

    How Does Cancer Produce Symptoms?

Cancer is a group of diseases that may cause virtually any sign or symptom. As cancer progresses, it goes through many stages, producing symptoms as it goes. The symptom produced will depend on the size of the cancer, the location of the cancer, and the surrounding organs or structures. If a cancer metastasizes (spreads), then symptoms will be very different, again depending on size, location, and surrounding structures. As a cancer grows, it begins to exert pressure on nearby organs, blood vessels and nerves. This pressure creates some of the signs and symptoms of cancer. If the cancer is in a critical area, such as certain parts of the brain, even the smallest tumor can produce early symptoms.

Sometimes cancers form in locations where symptoms may not be produced until the cancer has grown quite large. For example, some pancreatic cancers do not produce symptoms until they begin to grow around nearby nerves, causing a backache. Unfortunately by the time a pancreatic cancer causes back pain, it has usually reached an advanced stage. A cancer may cause generalized symptoms such as fever, fatigue, weight loss, etc. The cancer cells may release substances that alter metabolism. Or, the cancer may cause the immune system to react in ways that produce these symptoms.

Sometimes, cancer cells release substances into the bloodstream that cause symptoms not generally thought to result from cancers. For example, some cancers of the pancreas can release substances which affect blood clotting and cause blood clots to develop in veins of the legs. Some lung cancers produce hormone-like substances that affect blood calcium levels, affecting nerves and muscles and causing weakness and dizziness.

Why Is It Important To Recognize Symptoms?

The treatment of cancer is most successful when the cancer is detected as early as possible. It is possible to detect some cancers before symptoms occur. The American Cancer Society, and other organizations, encourage the early detection of certain cancers before symptoms occur by recommending a cancer-related checkup and specific early detection tests for people who do not have any symptoms. For additional information on early detection tests, see the American Cancer Society document on Cancer Detection Guidelines. However, these recommended early detection tests do not diminish the importance of reporting any symptoms to your doctor. Sometimes symptoms are ignored because the person is either frightened by their implications and refuses to seek medical help or does not recognize the symptom as being significant. It is very easy for individuals to think that a backache or fatigue is a "part of life" or that a breast mass is probably a cyst that will go away by itself. Whenever a symptom occurs, it should not be discounted or overlooked. This is especially true if the symptoms has been going on for a period of time, such as weeks.

    General cancer symptoms

It is important to know what some of the general (nonspecific) signs and symptoms of cancer are. They include unexplained weight loss, fever, fatigue, pain, changes in the skin.

Unexplained weight loss: Most people with cancer will experience weight loss at some time with their disease. An unexplained weight loss of about 10 pounds may be the first sign of cancer, particularly cancers of the pancreas, stomach, esophagus, or lung.

Fever: Fever is very common with cancer. Almost all patients with cancer will experience fever at some time, particularly if the cancer or its treatment affects the immune system and reduces resistance to infection. Less often, fever may be an early sign of cancer, such as with Hodgkin's disease.

Fatigue: Fatigue may be a significant symptom as the cancer progresses. It may occur early, especially if the cancer is causing a chronic loss of blood as in some colon cancer or stomach cancers.

    Pain

Pain may be an early sign with some cancers, such as bone cancers or testicular cancer. Most often, pain is a symptom of advanced disease. Skin clues: In addition to cancers of the skin, some internal cancers can produce visible skin signs such as darkening of the skin, or hyperpigmentation; reddening, or erythema; itching; and excessive hair growth.

    Specific cancer symptoms

In addition to the above general symptoms, the American Cancer Society has established the following seven common symptoms that could lead to a diagnosis of cancer.

    1. A change in bowel habits or bladder function. Chronic constipation, diarrhea, or a change in the size of the stool may indicate colon cancer. Pain with urination, blood in the urine, or change in bladder function could be related to bladder or prostate cancer. Any changes in bladder or bowel function should be reported to your doctor.

    2. Sores that do not heal. Skin cancers may bleed and resemble sores that do not heal. A persistent sore in the mouth could be an oral cancer and should be dealt with promptly, especially for patients who smoke, chew tobacco, or frequently drink alcohol. Sores on the penis or vagina should not be overlooked.

    3. Unusual bleeding or discharge. Unusual bleeding can occur in early or advanced cancer. Blood in the sputum is a sign of lung cancer. Blood in the stool could be a sign of colon or rectal cancer. Cancer of the lining of the uterus (endometrial cancer) or cervix can cause vaginal bleeding. Blood in the urine is a sign of possible bladder or kidney cancer. A bloody discharge from the nipple may be a sign of breast cancer.

    4. Thickening or lump in breast or other parts of the body. Many cancers can be felt through the skin, particularly in the breast, testicle, lymph nodes (glands), and the soft tissues of the body. A lump or thickening may be an early or late sign of cancer. Any lump or thickening should be reported to your doctor. You may be feeling a lump that is an early cancer that could be treated successfully.

    5. Indigestion or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms may indicate cancer of the esophagus, stomach, or pharynx (throat).

    6. Recent change in a wart or mole. A change in color, loss of definite borders, or an increase in size should be reported to your doctor without delay. The skin lesion may be a melanoma which, if diagnosed early, can be treated successfully.

    7. A nagging cough or hoarseness. A persistent cough that does not go away is a sign of lung cancer. Hoarseness can be a sign of cancer of the larynx (voice box) or thyroid. These are often late signs of cancer.

    Wife 1.0 Just Released

From my friend Lu who got it from Adesh and so on...
    Dear Tech Support,
Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 and noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of new space and valuable resources. No mention of this phenomenon was included in the product brochure.
In addition, Wife 1.0 installs itself into all other programs and launches during system initialization, where it monitors all other system activity. Applications such as Poker Night 10.3, Drunken Boys Night 2.5 and Saturday Football 5.0 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected.
I cannot seem to keep wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run some of my other favorite applications. I am thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0, but the uninstall does not work on this program.
Can you please help me !!!???
    Thanks,
    A TROUBLED USER

    ------------------------------------------------------------
    Dear TROUBLED USER,
This is a very common problem men complain about, but is mostly due to a primary misconception. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 with the idea that Wife 1.0 is merely a UTILITIES & ENTERTAINMENT program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and designed by it's creator to run everything.
It is unlikely you would be able to purge Wife 1.0 and still convert back to Girlfriend 7.0. Hidden operating files within your system would cause Girlfriend 7.0 to emulate Wife 1.0 so nothing is gained. It is impossible to uninstall, delete, or purge the program files from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is not designed to do this.
Some have tried to install Girlfriend 8.0 or Wife 2.0 but end up with more problems than the original system. Look in your manual under "Warnings- Alimony/Child support". I recommend you keep Wife 1.0 and deal with the situation.
I suggest installing background application program C:\YES DEAR to alleviate software augmentation. Having installed Wife 1.0 myself, I might also suggest you read the entire section regarding General Partnership Faults (GPFs). You must assume all responsibility for faults and problems that might occur, regardless of their cause. The best course of action will be to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE. In any case avoid excessive use of C:\YES DEAR because ultimately you may have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the operating system will return to normal. The system will run smoothly as long as you take the blame for all the GPFs.
Wife 1.0 is a great program, but very high-maintenance. Consider buying additional software to improve the performance of Wife 1.0. I recommend Flowers 3.1 and Diamonds 2K. Do not, under any circumstances install Secretary with Short Skirt 3.3. This is not a supported application for Wife 1.0 and is likely to cause irreversible damage to the operating system.
    Best of Luck,
    Tech Support

    Cancer

My uncle has been diagnosed with cancer. The doctors have given him 3-4 months. My younger brother and my cousin sister (uncle's daughter) accompany him everyday for radiation therapy. I dont mind death, but I hate the idea of waiting for it you know?
Funny how I stumbled upon cancer related things before I got the news about my uncle: I was reading a Telugu novel (Title: Prarthana Author: Yendamuri Veerendranath) based on cancer. I learnt from this novel about how the drug control department in India had categorized cancer as a rich mans disease; it means drug manufacturers can set any price they choose for the cancer drugs that they produce. [Headache tablets come under category 1; you can sell it probably at 100% profit. Cancer drugs are under category 4]. To my knowledge my uncle has never been rich, and I dont think hell ever be. I dont know how far the novel is accurate, but if what it says about cancer drugs being under category 4 is true, then it is unfortunate and in my opinion- is undemocratic.

I also watched Matrix on HBO some days back. Somewhere before the climax, the agents capture Morpheus; the chief agent tells Morpheus something to this effect during the interrogation: All mammals develop a harmony with their territory, but humans are the only mammals that destroy their territory and its natural resources. And humans multiply when the territory becomes too small and after its natural resources are sucked out, they move to another place: there is only one living thing that exhibits a similar behavior: The virus. Humans are the cancer to this world
That was not verbatim, but yes, that more or less is the essence.
Point to ponder: Why can't we - after putting a man on the moon, making the washing machine think, overcome time and distance barriers, yet to find a cure for AIDS, Cancer and common cold? Your thoughts?

Pizzas, Ice Cream, Burgers to Soldiers in Israel

If this is true, this is amazing. Maybe we can do something like this for soldiers in Siachen and Kargil, what say?
"...service to give you the opportunity to send Pizza and Pepsi*, and now also ice cream, to active duty soldiers. These soldiers include those on regular military service as well as those who have left their homes, families and jobs to serve the Jewish people as Miluim (Reserve Duty) fighters." All our deliveries are coordinated with the security forces and thus pose no security risk."

    Hi Suman,
I finished reading Sunnu yesternite and just wanted to tell you that it is a great piece of effort and the effort gave me a lot to think.
When I started feeling good for Sunnu that he had at last come to terms with Vandhana leaving him and had decided what to do with life - everything came to a stop suddenly and I was sort of shaken - maybe
saddened too.The last few paras are real senti stuff and I could feel a pinch in the heart to read - " I tried talking to them - no one hears me..no one sees me...".
I wonder if I am qualified enough to give you suggestions , but try getting Sunnu published before the world changes too much. Get it published before kids start getting bikes instead of bicycles when
they reach 8th standard , before Sunnus start using SMS instead of letters to be in touch with Vandhanas , before students get too selfish to study together at nights and help each other , before some recreation club starts a disco theque at Turtle Neck - and
before the Great Indian Middle Class disappears - with all its vision , values and vice. You would surely not want Sunnu to be read as a history book - with which people cannot associate themselves and their "growing up".
I would like to read Sunnu again - but this time in it's real form - a book - an actual novel.

A dream: So close and yet so far

I love America. Any person who respects freedom: who thinks wealth can be created will. I just might go to USA for a 3 month stint. If some big guy sitting somewhere doesn't fight with his wife and nods his head. I hope Mrs.Big guy is nice to him on that fateful day. I am planning to bring only a fistful of mud from America. And I shall save it till I breath last... as a token of respect to a great nation built by individuals who believed. And still do.
